1st Division Women’s Finals – Not Quiet Enough

Cowichan 17 – United 27
Laura Russell:  2 tries
Michelle Moore:  1 try, 1 convert

It wasn’t the repeat we’d hoped for but it was a tough battle last Saturday at Brockton Oval when our 1st Division Women took on United RFC.

It was quickly apparent that the United team that stepped onto the field for the BC Finals was not the same team the Piggies played at home 3 weeks ago.   In spite of a score that favored the Piggies, the previous game against United was a hard, bruising affair and the ladies knew the BC Final would be much the same.

And it was.  The game was hard hitting with great defense from both sides.  United jumped to an early 0-12 lead before the Piggies fought their way back to even the score 12-12.  United scored once more before the half and took a 12-17 lead into the half.

The second half saw Cowichan get into penalty trouble and United took full advantage extending their lead to 22-12.   But there was no quit in the Piggies.  Laura pounded across the line to close the gap 17-22.   The comeback, however, was not to be as United scored one last try to close out the game 17-27.

The Piggies knew they’d been beaten by a skilled and strong United team who had learned from the previous game and came prepared to shut down Cowichan’s potent offense.  If not for the penalty troubles in the early second half, the outcome may have been different.   But who knows?

Regardless, the Piggies played hard from start to finish and held their heads high in defeat.  The mood on the trip home was cheerful and energetic – they might have left champion but they sure celebrated like they were!  Piggie Pride through and through.

Thanks to Coaches Taffy and Coos for another great season.  Thanks to the supports who made the trip and special thanks to Derek Garside for driving the bus over and back.
