Premier Women 24 – Capilano 34

The Prem ladies made the trek to North Vancouver last weekend to play an experienced Capilano team.   This would be the Piggies’ second match against Caps this season, with the Caps having earlier stolen a very close match from the Piggies at Piggie Park.

Cowichan scored first then Caps answered with a converted try to make it even at 7 points each.
Cowichan took a 14-12 lead into the half.  Given the strain of travel, this was a very promising start for our Premier ladies.

Immediately following half,  the Piggies scored again to give them a 19-12 lead.  Caps quickly answered backed to make the score 19-17.  A series of tries were exchanged by both sides and it was a very even match until late in the game when Caps managed to stretch and hold the lead by 10 points.  By all accounts, a very entertaining match.

Cowichan Scorers:
Jenna Budgen:  1 try
Rebecca Kerswell:  1 try
Carolyn Gudmundseth:  2 tries
Quinn Battie:  2 converts

The ladies have show amazing promise in the Premier division this spring.  The Piggies have beaten (Burnaby), tied (Westshore) and competed (Caps & Seattle) in close games with the top 5 teams.   Though the Piggies will not make the play-offs this season, they have demonstrated they firmly belong in this division.

This weekend they will play SFU for the first time, 11:30 am k/o.  SFU sits immediately behind the Piggies in the standings and this should be an interesting game to see if they are as even as their records suggest.

Lastly congratulations to Piggies Brandi Van Eeuwen, Laura Russell and Tyson Taylor for receiving invitations to the Rugby Canada West Identification Camp, March 16-20 at Shawnigan Lake School.

1st Division Men 50 – UVic Saxons 10

The 1st traveled to UVic last weekend to play the Saxons in an exhibition match.  The Saxon’s are the 3rd team at the University and with the Premier Vikes and 1st Division Norseman playing CW later the same day, the Saxon’s did not have the benefit of the very deep UVic program – thus the disparity in the score.

The guys had a good run around, worked on a few plays, and got some of the younger players into the mix.

This weekend brings our old foes Port Alberni to Piggie Park.  The Sheep are a single point ahead of the Piggies in the standings so if the Piggies want to make a move in the standings so they can secure a home play-off spot, it has to start this weekend with a win (preferably a bonus point win).
