1st Division Men 19 – Nanaimo Hornets 13

Fresh off one of their best games of the season against Westshore, the Piggies knew the path to the rematch went through Nanaimo’s May Bennett Park.

It wasn’t pretty a game by any description.

The Piggies controlled the play and territory early jumped out to an early lead with tries from Cody Milne and Matt Melgaard, both converted by Jenner Teufel.

Cowichan’s early surge started to wane a bit after that, and Nanaimo scored a “soft” try with about 10 minutes left in the half, followed by a penalty goal, and it was 14-8 at halftime.

In contrast to the Piggies dominance early in the first half, play was mostly back-and-forth in the second half. Mike Rea added to Cowichan’s lead with an unconverted try, then with about 15 minutes left to play, the Hornets got their second try, making it 19-13, where the score remained.

Not surprisingly for a heated playoff game between longtime rivals, the game got scrappy down the stretch. Both teams struggled with discipline issues as a result of inconsistent, if not puzzling, officiating. However, in the end, the Piggies regained composure to seal the victory and the coveted rematch with Westshore Velox.

The Cowichan Cup (Island Final) will be played Saturday at Westshore Parks & Recreation Centre, Colwood, 2:30 pm.

The last match between Cowichan and Westshore was fiercely fought. The Piggies took the momentum of that match to Nanaimo last weekend and expect to do the same this weekend. Based on the talent and depth on this squad, and the way the Piggies have played in the last few weeks, the Piggie Nation should expect much the same in the Island final.

Premier Women 53 – Bayside 17

The Premier Ladies finished off their season with a big victory over Bayside. The Piggies finished the season with a respectable 4-9-1 record. The Piggie showed they can compete at this level and demonstrated Piggie Pride every weekend!

Their final game was a scoring fest – opening with Shanise Gelaude scoring from the wing, followed by Rebecca Kerswell scoring two tries and Ashley Smith score one try. Quinn Battie converted one to make it 22-7 at half.

The second half saw Rebecca adding another 2 tries, followed by Carolyn’s two and wrapping up with Tyson Beukeboom’s single. Quinn converted three.

A fine statement to end the season. Well done ladies!

3rd Division Men

The 3rd Division Men were forced to forfeit their match against Comox due to shortage of players.

It was disappointing to forfeit this game but it was a necessary decision. Having lost the 3rd division league all of last season put a damper on our historically strong program at that level. It’s an essential piece of our Club, the stepping stone from Junior to Senior Men’s rugby, and the slow slope into retirement. It’s essential for Cowichan Rugby, as it is for all Island Clubs.

Comox will carry the North Island honours down to Westshore Saturday in the Island Final at 1:00 pm. We wish them luck
