1st Division Women

Cowichan Scorers:

  • Carolyn Gudmunseth – 3 tries
  • Hannah McKevitt – 2 tries
  • Miranda Sample – 2 tries
  • Tyson Beukeboom – a conversion

The Cowichan Women recorded their first win of the season last weekend against a strong Castaway Wanderers roster. The team goals for this game were line speed in defence (coming up fast on defence therefore putting pressure on their attack and decision making) and speed in our attack.  The ladies excelled at both those goals consistently throughout the game.

The Piggies had a good lead for most of the first half, however, there was a short lapse on defense shortly after half time where CW was able to slip in some tries. At one point in the game near the end of the 2nd half the Piggies were down by 1pt.  But Cowichan showed their fortitude and came back to win the try with an excellent try by Carolyn Gudmundseth through the middle  from a pass off Tyson Beukeboom with only about 5 min left in the game.

Cowichan hosts CW this Saturday, Nov 2 in a double header with our men’s team.

The previous weekend (October 19), the women played in Nanaimo. The score was fairly one-sided in Nanaimo’s favor: 43-7.

Chelsea Strandlund scored our only try with Tyson Beukeboom making the conversion.  The game was played in rain fall and the ladies did not perform well in these conditions, nor adapt well. Several unforced errors were made, and the Piggies did not protect their ball in contact.

The Piggies are looking  forward to a better performance against Nanaimo on Nov 16 when we play them at Piggy Park.

1st Division Men

Cowichan Scorers:

  • Owen Wood – penalty
  • Noah Dobson – try
  • Robin Gusse – try
  • Roan Carter – try

Playing shorthanded the whole game, the Cowichan Piggies ended up on the wrong side of a 40-20 final score when they travelled to Port Alberni for a Times Cup rugby match with the Black Sheep.

With several players out of town or injured, Cowichan took 14 over the Hump, and found themselves down to 13 almost immediately after they arrived.

Two players down, the Piggies still got down to business and scored the first points of the match on a penalty kick by Owen Wood four minutes in. Strong in the forward ranks, Alberni came back hard and scored a try around the 10-minute mark. Cowichan replied when Noah Dobson scored in the corner, giving the Piggies a brief 8-7 lead.

Alberni went up 14-8 before the Piggies suffered yet another injury and were down to 12 guys for the last 10 minutes of the first half. The Sheep took advantage of that to score two more, and it was 28-8 for the hosts at halftime.

Cowichan managed to get one player back for the second half, and added tries from Robin Gusse and newcomer Roan Carter. Alberni also scored a pair in the second half, but Coach Wright was pleased to play to a stalemate over the last 40 minutes.

The Piggies have now split their two games against the Black Sheep this season, and are also 1-1 in Times Cup play. Wright is looking forward to the rubber match against Alberni.

This weekend the Piggies host the Surrey Beavers – their first game against a mainland team of the season.  The Beavers are a hard driving team that sit in 2nd place in the standings, immediately above the Piggies.  Historically, games between the Piggies and Beavers have been battles and we’re expecting much the same this weekend.
