Premier Women 7 – Westshore 64

Cowichan scorers:

  • Laura Russell – try
  • Kelly Russell – convert

The Premier women took on Westshore the number 1 ranked team in the league and it showed.  The Piggies points came from sister duo Kelly and Laura.  The Russels did a give and go down the sideline to score Cowichan only try! Pressed down by Laura and converted by Kelly!

Half time saw Cowichan down 22-7 but in the last 20min westshore amped it up and final score was 64-7.  There is no denying the fact that WS is a talented squad but at the end of the game everyone was pretty disappointed!  The girls know what to expect and will build for a home rematch on March 18!

Players of the game went to Sherry Spence and Rebecca Kerswell

The Premier ladies are on the road this weekend for a match at Capilano.  The Piggies and Caps are tied in the standings.  It should be a great match!

1st Division Men 22 – Westshore 10

Cowichan scorers:

  • Jenner Teufel – try, penalty, 2 converts
  • Cam Jervis – try
  • Matt Melgaard – try

The 1st Division Men followed the Premier women down to Westshore last weekend but with a different result.  Though the Cowichan Cup season is only just off the ground, the Piggies are off to a promising start.  The Piggies were looking to build off the momentum of last week’s win over the Black Sheep and were rewarded by combining strong defence with an efficient attack.

The game started with the Piggies under attack for the first 10-15 minutes but the Piggies held their ground, aided by WS ball handling mistakes and penalties.  Gradually, field position shifted in the Piggies favour.  A balanced attack between the forwards and back lead to the first try being scored in the corner by Cam Jervis.  Jenner converted.

After another exchange of possession, largely between the 22’s, the Piggies struck again with a try and conversion by Jenner.  Piggies 12 – Westshore 0 at half.

Westshore started the second half much like the first but with more success.  A quick try in the corner went unconverted.   The game started to get a bit more intense from that point – as it tends to do between long time rivals.  The Piggies kept their composure, for the most part, and continued to press their advantage.  Jenner added a penalty and then Westshore killer Matt Melgaard scored.  Westshore scored one more unconverted try but the damage was done.  Final score, 22 Cowichan – 10 Westshore.

The boys will host Port Alberni this weekend.  The Sheep narrowly lost the long delayed Times Cup final last weekend to league leading Nanaimo, 38-36.  The Sheep will be looking to avenge their home field lose two weekends ago and the Piggies will be looking to push for their 3rd victory in a row.  A combination that will surely lead to a great match!

3rd Division Men host Comox Kickers RFC

The 3rds will host Comox this weekend.  Comox has yet to have a game this season so lets get as many bodies out as possible and give the Kickers a run.  Comox will need some help and the aim is to play 15 v 15.  Contact Kim if you’re available.
