Everyone on deck!

Finally, a weekend where every single Piggie team hit the pitch!  From top to bottom, the green and black covered all corners of Victoria and hit Piggie Park en masse!

2nd Division Women vs Westshore

The Division 2 Cowichan Piggy women faced off against the Westshore Valkries last Saturday morning.  It was a great game for learning with lots of new players getting their first taste of the game, and some seasoned players getting back into it.  There were many great tackles and the play was back and forth throughout the 60 minutes.  Westshore came away with the win in the end but the score did not reflect the skills and heart shown by the Cowichan ladies.

Lauren Nutt scored early to tie up the game in the first half. Westshore really displayed their fitness with a few quick trys in the middle of the game. Cowichan’s second try, and the final try of the game, was completed by Jackie Wrigglesworth but was an awesome team effort to finish off the game.

The Cowichan Piggies Division 2 team is always looking for new players and is a great place to start if you have ever been interested in rugby.

Next Game:  October 15 @ Comox

Premier Women 29 vs Castaway-Wanderers 43

Cowichan Premier Women’s team took on the reigning league Champs, the Castaway Wanderers, last weekend.  Although an exhibition game, it was still a very exciting game, particularly as both teams fielded their maximum national team allotment – CW’s on the backline and ours, Tyson Laura and Kelly, playing back row.

It was a very back and forth game, where nearly every score by one team was answered swiftly by the other.  Five players crash over for tries: Ashley Smith, Kaelyn Palmer, Laura Russell, Rebecca Kerswell and Kelly Russell scored a try and slotted 2 converts.   Rebecca Saari and Angela Davies were named players of the game.

1st Divison Men 39 vs JBAA 27

One of the games that the Piggie Nation most looks forward to is the match against JBAA.  This game would not disappoint. Notching their first win of the season, the Piggies took the lead early and never let it go.

This young team has shown vast improvement with each game.  Where last game was a game of two halves, this time it was a complete game.  The Piggies jumped out to an early 17-0 lead and looked to be in full control of the match.  This forced JBAA to make some key subs in the pack and the result was 10 points.  By half time it was 17-10 Piggies.

The second half was a much tighter, much more physical affair.  The combination of hard work at training, youthfulness and speed mixed with some key veteran presence started to pay off for the Piggies.  Settling into a steady game of punishing runs, solid ball control and patience, the Piggies pulled away and sealed their first win of the season, with a bonus point as a cherry on top!

Fun facts:

  1. This is the forth season in a row that the Piggies have beaten JBAA.
  2. All but one player on the pitch, Mike “Sideshow” Debrouwer, was Cowichan developed.
  3. 10 of the 21 players on the list are 2nd generation Piggies.

Cowichan scorers:

  • Jenner Teufel:  1 try, 1 penalty, 4 converts
  • Scotty McLeod:  1 try
  • Peyton Edgar: 1 try
  • Darren Sage: 1 try
  • Robbie McDonnel:  1 try

Next Game:  October 1 @ Comox (Exhibition).  Note: any 3rd division types who want a game are strongly encouraged to come out.

U18 Boys 34 vs Westshore 34

The boys travelled down to Colwood last weekend.  The Piggies started slow and founded themselves down by 3 tries early in the game. However, the boys refocused and stormed back to even the game, and there it stayed.

Next Game:  October 16 @ CW

U16 Boys 58 v Capilano Gold 51

Due to some last minute sicknesses and no shows 10 boys made the trip over early Sunday for a game against Capilano gold.  The boys took the field bolstered by a few caps players lent to us so we could let the kids play.

The game was back and forth from the opening kickoff with tries being scored fast and furious. Caps set out to an early lead only to have it tied at half.  Thanks to an outstanding effort by Cowichan #10 Ciaran Breen with six tries the piggies prevailed at the final whistle 58-51. Tires scored by Ciaran (6), Torren Kaiser (2), Kyle Watson (1), and Joel Cook (1). Ciaran also had three conversions and Joel added one of his own.

A big thank you to the Capilano parents who shuttled the boys to and from the ferry so we could make the game.

Next Game: October 2 host UBCOB

U14, U16, & U18 Girls

Sunday saw the first competitive session for the junior girls program this fall. Cowichan hosted players from: Comox, Campbell River, Westshore, Castaway Wanders and James Bay.

The U14 girls combined together doing skill drills and a lively game of touch.  On field 2 the U16 & U18 ladies played sevens in a round robin style jamboree.  There were lots of awesome teaching moments, evidence of the things being coached in practice played out on the pitch and smiles all around.

Several players had their first go in a game format and many of our experienced athletes ran in tries and encouraged the new gals.

Thanks to Steve Hale who put in 3 hrs straight of refereeing and all the coaches that made it a great, positive day for all!

There is still space to welcome new players in U14-U18, training Wednesday’s 7-8:30pm

Next Game:  October 2 All three teams @ Comox for “all island sevens jamboree”.
