February 2015 = The Return of 3 Senior Teams

Games this Weekend

Saturday, February 7: 1st Division Men vs. UVic Saxons (exhibition), 1:00 pm @ Piggie Park

Sunday, February 8: 3rd Division Men vs. Powell River/Comox, 1:00 pm @ Piggie Park

3rd Division Men

This weekend sees the return of the VIRU 3rd division! This league will be exhibition and will constitute most of the Island clubs plus few clubs who have combined so as to keep rugby alive in their area. The teams competing are Powell River/Comox, Nanaimo/VIU, Cowichan, Velox, Castaway-Wanderers, and James Bay.

With thanks to Andrew Spray, the rules of competition have been adjusted so that games get played and rugby at the social level can be revived this Spring. Judging from the response on the Club’s Facebook page, this weekend’s match against Powell River/Comox will be a good ol’fashion Piggie reunion!

Anyone interested in playing 3rds should contact Kim Anderton.

1st Division Men

January 31 Game Report: 1st Division Men 20 vs Port Alberni Black Sheep 19 (Cowichan Cup)

Last weekend a very strong Black Sheep flocked (sorry, I can’t help myself) to Piggie Park for the first Cowichan Cup competition of the 2015. The Piggies were looking to gain some points and the Sheep were looking to solidify their second place spot.

Cowichan made improvements from the week before and was the stronger in all aspects of the game… even if the score doesn’t reflect it.

Cowichan Scorers:

Mike Roberts: 2 tries
Danny Hamstra: 2 converts, 2 penalties

Game Preview:  February 7, 1st Division Men vs UVic Saxons, 1:00 pm @ Piggie Park

This weekend the 1st Division Men play an exhibition match against the UVic Saxons. This would be the UVic 3rd team and will be a very young side. We may see a few of the same faces we saw the weekend before last or we may see brand new faces – such is the wealth of the UVic rugby program. Though a friendly, the Piggies will be using this opportunity to continue to build toward their goal of winning the Cowichan Cup.

1st Division Women

February 21 – mark the date – is when the BC Champion 1st Division Women resume play. An interminably long wait, especially considering the men will have be playing 5 weeks already, the lasses are surely aching to shake off the rust and get back defending their BC Championship title. More to come when the date grows nearer
