Game Reports – April 14 & 15

1st Division Women

Yet another tough, close game for the Cowichan women’s team, with an early start and 16 player and 4 injured, the undefeated Piggies took on Abbotsford.  Who could ask for more?  We knew it was going to be a rough hard hitting game so we mixed up the line from the last time we played them, putting Carolyn back at 15 as Jamaina was available to play!  Abbotsford, unfortunately, had a strong pack, which put Marika under constant pressure.

Abbotsford opened the scoring with a rolling maul but in the second half we moved some players around to try and get some offense.  The Cowichan pack kept strong and started to wear the strong Abbotsford pack down – it was fitness in the forwards that won the battle! After numerous offsides by Abby, they were finally penalized by the ref and at the 5m line, Sherry took a quick tap penalty and with the help of her forwards got pushed over the line! Then, 10 min later Cowichan got rewarded a penalty and a 9 -10 switch saw Carolyn bust through a gap and run in for another try which was converted by Caity Genereaux!  Carolyn would go on to score a second try.

Biggest highlight of the game was the new “MACAW” play working, which was elicited a “WOW” reaction from the ref.

Final score 17-12

Our Cowichan Women have their final league game this next weekend at home vs Naniamo.  Come watch the gals in green and black as they make a run for an undefeated season at 1130 KO

3rd Division Men

The 3rds went with a solid team to Comox on a beautiful Sunday morning, thought the spirits were high, the conversation on the bus was strictly business. We all knew what laid ahead, win on the day and we had a chance at redemption against Velox next week and seeded into the provincials, lose and we all go home to do whatever we do in the off season.  Our manager Tom was off ill with an injury that can only be described as “pinky eye”.

The game was refereed by Pat Palfrey who was the same last time the 3rds came to Comox.  Cards in hand Pat blew the whistle to begin the game, which can only be described as classic Piggy ball.

We rucked, we mauled, we got rucked, we got mauled.  Today was a day where our team came together!  Everyone knew there role, from Rogi to Gregor to Kim to Josh to Terrence to the Moss battalion in the back row to Iain to David to Jerrod to Rudi to Mike and Lewkis on the wing.  Thankfully we had spares on the side in Coos, Hopsing, Sam and Ashley sparing for the team.  Everyone made their tackles, everyone supported there teammates, the boot of Owen was second to none. We came for war and we proved victorious!  Another week and we will start again at zero.

Booster are welcome as we taken on  Velox for the Island final!  Let’s make the club proud!

1st Division Men

The 1st division men hosted Richmond this past weekend with a play-off spot on the line.  Unfortunately, Richmond took the day 36-17 against a battered and bruised Piggie side, and likely the last play-off spot.  The season winds down this weekend with a trip to the historic Brockton Oval to play Rowers.
