The New Year Begins

Time to get it going for this year’s rugby season!  The senior teams start their training on Tuesday, January 14th at 7pm sharp at the club.  This half should prove interesting as we seem to be on an upward swing with new and old players coming to play at the club.

First game for the Senior Men is Saturday, Feb 1st vs Port Alberni at Cowichan.

Over/Under Game, 2014 Edition

The traditional match saw the over/under age drop considerably this to 25.  This is due to an influx of new, younger players into the club.  As it was, the game was a well played game of rugby without the proliferation of shenanigans we usually see at this game. Club is changing maybe?  I think the overs won by a 4-2 try-line.

Frances Kelsey Rugby

Big thanks to Craig Schmidt of Heartwood Tree Service 250-812-4204 (If anyone has some tree work to do, or if you want a load of firewood also give him a shout).

Craig is a Shawnigan resident who is running the Frances Kelsey Rugby Program. Over Christmas he has organized several fundraisers for the program with firewood splitting and delivery and a weekend of Christmas Tree Chipping.  To date they have been able to pay off the scrum machine purchased last year and have close to $1000 in the bank.  Great work!

The Kelsey program is training currently with morning sessions run by Tom Fogarty and afternoon sessions on Wednesdays at 3:30 run by Craig.  They have quite a few boys out and some very good athletes involved.  The team could always use a bit of help here and there with coaching so if you are available to run a specialized session, please contact Craig.  They also have a Facebook page – Frances Kelsey Rugby!/groups/149944731731907/ so sign in and like their page to follow their progress.  Hopefully we’ll see them participating in the “Joe” in the early spring.

Canada U20 vs UBCOB

Saturday, February 1st, 5:30pm

This game should be interesting.  UBCOB Ravens will be bringing over their Premier side to play a match against the Canada U-20 team at Westhills Stadium (Langford) Saturday, February 1.  The game is set to Kick off at about 5:30 and right after this there will be a “Judah Campbell” Ultra 7’s match which will feature the VIRU vs the Mainland.
We have a big game against Port Alberni the same day, but perhaps a good follow up match would be the tilts in Langford later in the afternoon.

Around the Grounds

  • 2 Light masts to be placed outside fence along parking lot edge of field.  These will be tall masts and the lights on these should provide decent lighting along that side of the fields. Should have one field completely lit hopefully soon. (Not good enough for a game but excellent for training)
  • Moving our caretakers Hazel & Lance from their location to a better suited spot on the property (more private) ongoing.  They are doing a great job keeping things clean.  Stay tuned for an exclusive Piggie Post on Lance & Hazel!
  • Fields have never been in better condition as they are now.  All the weeds are gone and the grass in the areas seeded 3 years ago is really filling in. It’s starting to pay off having the alternate fields to work with.
  • The Ice Machine and Cooler were all repaired by a rugby friend. Thanks to whomever got that done.
  • Not sure if we gave Armstrong Gutters a thank-you for the great job they did in replacing the old gutters on the clubhouse.

  • Velox was to play Seattle on January 25th but they are now looking for a team to play them on that date.  The results of that Seattle/Velox game would have been interesting as both are top 1st Div clubs aspiring to be promoted to the Premier Division
  • Looks like UBC are all in to try and make the Premier League next season. Spoke to several who have close ties with UBC.
  • Cornish Pirates (Matt Evans starting @ #10) won their game on Boxing Day vs Plymouth Albion (10-3), but lost last weekend. They are still in the hunt. They had 3050 spectators out at The Mennaye Field, Penzance to watch them the day after Christmas. Good crowd.
  • Former Piggie Junior, #4 Brett Beukeboom and former Piggie, #7 Sean-Michael Stephen, started for Plymouth Albion. The Pirates lost their next game on January 4th, away 35-30 vs Rotherham (1700 fans) then won last weekend vs Ayr in a British & Irish Cup match. 28-21. You can follow the Pirates by going to their website at
  • Esquimalt High School Rugby Academy didn’t start up this past fall. Looks now to start fall 2014.
  • CW’s U-16’s won the BC U-16 Championship in December.

Employment Options

  • Saanich Fire Dept. is accepting applications for firefighters
  • City of Duncan is looking to hire 1 full time Public Works Labourer ($23/hr to start) and a part timer.
  • Prices Locks in Duncan are looking to hire an apprentice locksmith to work towards being a journeymen locksmith.
