Losing is for those who are afraid to risk everything to win......Know No Fear...Go Green or Go Home!

LATE RESULT FROM LAST WEEKEND

VIRU U-16 Men: Cowichan RFC 36 vs Castaway Wanderers RFC 5.

A super result for our guys considering CW was a Provincial Finalist last year and have a very roust Junior program. Watching young Piggie Super Sniper, Patrick Kay (Cowichan HS) is a real treat.  His vision of the field at #10 and kicking for space, touch and goal is something you see at the Senior Men's levels.  Come out and watch these kids at home vs Nanaimo this Sunday at noon....then roll into the clubhouse for Superbowl Festivities!

THOMAS KAY

Thomas is now in Duncan, following some very intense cancer treatments - Thomas is still fighting his battle.  The players from the Senior Men's side all met last week and thought, what better way to support Thomas than to dedicate this Spring season to his recovery.  As we know, Thomas has a passion for Rugby, music, his buddies and is a true Cowichan Valley kid.

The players decided, and thanks to Mrs. P's embroidery, and in consultation with Thomas and his girlfriend, have come up with an inspirational patch that will be worn on the Senior Men's jerseys for the rest of the season.

There will be a 50/50 organized for this weekend's games with the profits going towards Thomas' nutritional needs while he heels. Thomas' word is HOPE.

Update: This morning Simon Smolden, President of Burnaby Lake RFC e-mailed me upon hearing about Thomas, Burnaby RFC voted to waive the fees CRFC was to pay Burnaby Lake RFC for a player transfer.  Burnaby Lake RFC would like the fees to go to the Thomas Fund.

TEAM REPORTS

1st Division Women:

Cowichan RFC are the defending BC Champs in this 11 team league that includes Kamloops, Seattle, Abbotsford, Port Alberni, Bayside, United, UBC, SFU, Port Alberni, Cowichan and U-Vic. The ladies take to the field for the league opener against Brad Skene's U-Vic Vikes.  This should be very entertaining as both these sides are very similar in their personel and styles.

The Vikes will be a young side but no doubt Coach Skene will have what may be a lack of skills made up in the fitness department. Cowichan has had 6 training sessions since New Years with players averaging 24-26 per session. Coach Steve Cowie, Lee Burridge and Dennis Murphy will their charges prepared for Saturday for sure.

CDI 1st Division Men:

This is an exciting team. A bunch of new faces will no doubt make their debut this weekend in men's rugby.  Casey Cavers, out of Ladysmith, is off a successful BC Rep Camp this past weekend and was chosen to Represent BC in an International contest vs a US team in San Diego later this Spring.  Casey is a rock solid hooker and looks to secure a strating spot on Cowichan's 2nd XV.  John Dubiel, also out of Ladysmith is also showing some good stuff in training and his big body a good set of skills will give the Cowichan Men another dimension.  Scott McLeod, out of Cowichan High School, has been to every training session for the Cowichan Men in January.  Scott also was chosen to Represent BC at this past weekends tryout in North Vancouver.  Scott will add tremendous technique and super open field play to the men's program.

The 2nd XV could feature 6-7 teenagers this weekend.  With 18 years olds playing with the men against the Capilanos, and showing very well, Cowichan RFC is slowly shifting to a large youth movement.  The front row this weekend could see Marvin Seymour and Casey Cavers, both out of Ladysmith HS and Scott MacLeod out of Cowichan HS pushing the 1-0 CW guys around.  The Ladysmith contingent is moving on into Cowichan Rugby and both the high school and the club have benefited from the two strong programs.

CDI Premiership Men:

Training is going well in preparation for this weekend's tilt vs Castaway Wanderers.  Cowichan's front row will no doubt enjoy going up against CW's new hooker, Robbie Wright, who played Junior rugby with the Piggies and schooled at Brentwood College.  Players braved chili weather Tuesday night and a skiff of snow on the field.  Great to see a couple of new exciting players out for the club Tuesday evening that makes the situation all that more dynamic.

3rd Division Men:

The game this weekend against CW was going to be played at 10am, Saturday, but late news has CW not organized enough to be able a muster a team for that time (They originally asked for the change).  So this weekend's game will go back to the original time and date the following Sunday down at Windsor Park in Oak Bay.

Last weekend saw 9 Junior players take the field for the 3rds.  Great to see.  Cowichan loaned Powell River 4 Senior players and all helped keep the game close for Powell River.  The influx of youngsters onto this roster is very encouraging for the club.  There is no better experience in rugby than playing with older senior players who are masters of the game and will teach the younger players how to play rugby properly.

Tidbits...

-Castaway Wanderers 3rd Div side beat Velox 36-25 last weekend. Their first 3rd Div game in 15 years!
-Castaway Wanderers has ex Piggie, Chad Plater, back playing rugby. Cool.
-Robbie "Boo Boo" Wright, former Cowichan Junior, (Brentwood College) is playing hooker for CW Prems.
-Evan Hall, Shawnigan Lake School and former CRFC Junior, is back playing rugby for CW after taking a season off. Great to see Evan back playing. (His dad, Mark Hall, is a former Head Coach with the club)
-Ilatia Iricorbagu (former Piggie) played for Bayside this past weekend against CW.
-Mike Roberts and Chris Clarke were out training for our senior men this week...welcome additions.
-Burnaby RFC forfeited to U-Vic last weekend. Burnaby president, Simon Smolden informed the writer that this was simply due to their training and game facilities being closed. Their coach determined that it was unsafe for untrained players top take the field. They do not have a lack of player problem as we have seen reported. They look forward to hosting Cowichan in a month....Good News. We hope BLRC carries on as a robust form member of the BCRU community.
-Rugby Canada AGM in Victoria reportedly was one of the most productive meetings they have had in recent years. Great to hear. I know the RC coaches and staff are alot more closely connected with the clubs now. (Consulting with Club Coaches, watching club games, watching Junior games etc.) Maybe there will be some RC people out watching the games this weekend!
