The Cowichan Rugby Club and Cowichan Secondary School are pleased to announce the 7th Annual Joe McGeachy Memorial High School Rugby Tournament, March 6th & 7th.
The tournament consists of both a boys and girls competition, to be held on both days at Cowichan Secondary and CRFC’s Piggie Park (schedule attached).
The Joe McGeachy Memorial High School Rugby Tournament was established by Ron Glass (CSS Rugby) with the support of the McGeachy family following the untimely death of Joe in August 2002. Joe was a long time member of the Cowichan Rugby Club, and wore many hats. His life as a Piggie began as a player in the junior ranks at 17 year old, and continued as in the senior ranks; as a coach of the U19 team; as Club President; and finally as the Premier team manager until his death. Joe was also a Cowichan Thunderbird Rugby alumnus, playing under Bill Murray in the mid-late 60s.
The intention of the tournament is to foster young rugby in the Valley and establish bonds between the schools and CRFC – a cause that was near and dear to Joe’s heart. This year, any tournament proceeds will be directed to the Kay family on behalf of Thomas Kay. Thomas, a past captain of the T-Bird rugby team and member of the Cowichan Rugby Club, is battling with a rare form of lymphoma.
The McGeachy family wishes to acknowledge the efforts of the coaching staff at Cowichan Secondary and all the volunteers who lovingly give their time to support and remember their 'absent friend' Joe.
Following the tournament, the Cowichan Piggies will host UBCOB Ravens in CDI 1st Division & Premiership action.
