GAME SUMMARIES

Herd Road grounds took a beating this past weekend, but despite having nine High School games on Friday and Saturday, the field shaped up for the Senior Men Saturday afternoon.  Some of the Ravens players commented to the writer that our field was actually in good shape considering the shape of some of the Mainland fields they have played on.  They weren't concerned at all at a bit of mud....

The Ravens came over with 32 players and were all looking forward to playing at the "hallowed" Herd Road field.  According to the Old Boys revered coach and long time player, Jim Yenguchi, Cowichan is a must play for anyone and his young players had all heard of the Piggie Dome and were looking forward to their on and off field experiences in the Cowichan Valley.  Had a great talk with Jim who is adament about inclusion and belief in growing from within which the Old Boys are currently working on.

The clubhouse renos have been a real hit and after the matches the Piggies entertained our friends from the mainland for after game festivities.

Great results the Piggies on the field this past weekend.  The Prems. put on a show and performed to their potential in their 30-5 victory over the UBC Old Boys Ravens, a stalwart club in the Premiership over the years. The two's also came away with a victory, where the 13-12 score really didn't reflect the play at all.

Premier Piggie Man of the Match-Backs: Tom Kerswell (2 tries)
Premier Piggie Man of the Match-Forwards: Kim Anderton
1st Div. Piggie Man of the Match-Forwards: Kim Anderton (Unsung hero of the day)
1st Div. Piggie Man of the Match-Backs: Josh Sutton

The Prems. kept their foot on the gas for the whole game despite being down 1 man for 70 minutes.  A complete game that saw many positives from all areas.  Defence and tackling took a turn for the better this past weekend with training the previous week focusing on different strategies.

Both Cowichan teams rose in the standings with 4 games remaining in the season.  The Prems. currently sit in 10th with 3 other teams just ahead of us and within reach. The 1st Div. Men jumped two spots to sit in 8th place with only a few points separating us from the 3 teams ahead.

This week the focus will be on arch rivals, Velox Valhallions, whose teams did not fair well against Capilanos. Their Prems lost 22-3 and their two's lost 66-0 over in North Vancouver. Velox are in the top 3 in the standings so far this season and no doubt will be looking to recover this weekend at home against the Piggies. Velox 1st Div. are just ahead of Cowichan in the standings at present.

THIRD DIVISION RUGBY (No game this weekend)

The mighty 3rds have a break this up coming weekend (bye week) so those looking for a game are encouraged to train this week. The second team would like to strengthen the bench for this weekend's crucial tilt vs. Velox down in Victoria. At this time of the season player depth is crucial and it would be great to see excellent numbers out for training this week in preparation to roll into Velox in numbers.
