GAME REPORT
The sun was shining and a good crowd was on hand for the games.
U20 Tide v. Valley Venom
It started with a regional "All Star" game with the Vancouver Island Under-20 Crimson Tide taking on the Fraser Valley Venom Under 20 squad. The Tide was up 10-7 at the half but the Valley side put down the accelerator and were able to upend the locals 25-15 for a final score. Player of the match for the Tide was local Cowichan High School product, Scott McLeod.
CRFC vs. Ballymena RFC
It was grand for Ballymena as they came out quickly and scored two tries within minutes to set the tone for the day. Cowichan composed themselves and kept possession for a spell before the halftime whistle revealed a 22-0 gap in the visitor%u2019s favour. The second half was much of the same with Cowichan crossing the line once for a final tally of 48-5. Ballymena is an Under 23 side and slightly reminiscent of the Canadian Development Pacific Pride team (now defunct) in their playing style, generally everyone looks a similar physique whether 1 or 15, and can run all day with pace. The backs are skilled and long spiral passes weave across the field when they%u2019re on attack. Cowichan had a mishmash of playing levels from Prem to 3rds and couldn%u2019t match the tourists for pace and skill. Big Marvin Seymour from was named player of the match for Cowichan.
Ballymena's, after spending 4 days in the Cowichan Valley, now head off to Victoria where they will be against James Bay AA at Bullen Park on Wednesday July 1st.
Speaking of men from Ballymena, one of the surprises on the day was to see Will Millar in the crowd. Will Millar was the lead singer of the musical group the Irish Rovers. Will calls the Cowichan Valley and came out to support rugby and his bretheren from back home.
Other than the scoreboard, a good day for rugby in the Valley!
