JUNIOR RUGBY
Looks really good so far. All new players are welcome...the season is young and we are always looking for new talent that want to come and enjoy rugby and fitness.
It's also a super opportunity for the High Schoolers, both Junior and Senior Schools, to come out to get prepared for their upcoming spring Junior and Senior High School seasons.
Tuesday and Thursdays at 4:00pm see the U-18 Girls (Grade 10, 11 & 12 age group) going through their paces. Alana Skene has a great group out this season with 20-24 girls out. Unfortunately their first game was cancelled for this weekend. The season does expect some excitement with several of the mainland teams making the trip over to Cowichan to our young ladies!
Was out watching training on Wed. evening and the field was full of players and coaches. 60ish in all. The U-19's look very good with some large bollocking forwards evident and swiftness in the backs. The turnout was 19 players for the Junior Men with some more to come. All High Schools in the Valley were represented which is good to see. Mike Moss is heading this group as Head Coach.
The U-17's had a large group out with Judsen Garside at the helm and being assisted by Dennis Murphy and Andrew Wood. This group looks to carry on with their championship run of last year at the BC U-16 Provincials. The group included about 24 players on Wed.
The U-15's that were out looked very encouraging numbers wise. Jake Teufel and Doug Wooldridge ran the youngsters through their paces and all looked very enthusiastic. 18 players were evident.
The U-17's and 19's take on big rival, JBAA this weekend at home. JBAA has re-entered a U-17 squad in the league which is great to see after a couple of years abscence. Scouting reports are that the JBAA U-17's should be strong with a large group of their players coming from Esquimalt High School. The JBAA U-19's will be a mix of boys from Oak Bay High School and Esquimalt High School. JBAA has a very good coaching crew of Andrew Moffatt, Jerod Barker and yes....Jin "Mother" Hubbard is apparently back in the mix with the JBAA Junior program.
The U-15's up to today are idle but will get into their schedule in coming weeks.
