The Cowichan Rugby Club has lots of bills to pay including $178.51 BCRU Registration Dues for each Senior Member that has played and is on a roster sheet. The roster sheets are submitted to the BCRU and they bill Cowichan RFC the BCRU dues for each player that has played. Many players who have played have yet to submit their dues. (Juniors cost the club about $115.00 to register so their dues are basicall a break even point)

Only 25 Senior Men and 18 Senior Women have paid something towards their $300.00 Senior Player Dues.

So far we have had 63 different Senior Men and 23 different Senior Women step on the field to play a game Since Sept 1st. In other words we have 63 23 players names on a roster that has been submitted to the BCRU. Cowichan RFC subsequeently is billed for all those players. The current dues collected do not cover the amount the club will be billed.

Below is a breakdown of what we have to pay Rugby Canada, British Columbia Rugby Union and the Vancouver Island Rugby Union for each Senior Player.

Rugby Canada - $93.93 Covers insurance and the operation of RC
BC Rugby Union - $73.33 Covers the operation of the BCRU
VI Rugby Union - $11.25 Covers the operation of the VIRU

TOTAL COST TO CLUB FOR EACH SENIOR PLAYER: $178.51

Of your $300.00 in dues, $178.51 is sent off to register you with the various agencies. The remaining $121.49 goes towards the operations of the club and paying bills such as the $4500.00 per year average cost for referees.

Please pay up regarding your dues.

THIS PAST WEEKEND'S GAMES

SENIOR WOMEN

Had another good game against Port Alberni. The young PA group put up a spirited fight and did account for 18 points. Our women were just too strong on the day racking up over 60 points in the victory. Final score was 65-18.

SENIOR MEN

Our 1st Div Men played well on the day in their 27-3 victory over the Jutes from U-Vic. 16 year old Patrick Kay had another great day accounting for 11 of Cowichan's 27 points. Kay is starting to feel very comfortable at Fly Half playing in the Men's Leagues and he is now in 3rd place in league scoring with 28 points in only 3 games. Dan Barber, formerly of Brentwood College, made his debut at #7 and was flying all over the field and was rewarded with a try of his own. The win places the 1st's. (See the league scoring races below)

The Prems played pretty well against Velox and were ahead for 60 minutes of the game. It seem we our consistant is having a 10 minute let down in games played and again, as in the U-Vic game, the small window afforded the opposition gave them the necessary points for the win. Our guys are a very young side which includes several 18-19 year olds in key positions. (Scott McLeod at Hooker and John Dubiel at #8) John Dubiel had a wonderful try in the first half for Cowichan on a burst in from the 30m line. John was chosen as Man of the Match for his great play on the day.

The 3rds travelled down to Velox and were defeated 40-10. Velox were strong this weekend as their 1st's had a bye. So a good win for them at home. The boys were a bit short of players on the day.

U-18 Women charged over to Abbotsford and dismantled the home side despite the tough road game. The girls are undefeated so far this year and look to be the team to beat. Scoreline was 41-10 for Cowichan. Great job ladies!

U-15 Boys lost to BC Finalist Velox 45-5 on Sunday. The youngsters have a good number of players showing some talent but Velox has a couple of speedsters that simply outran everyone once they got the ball.

U-17's handily defeated Velox 70-0. The boys are the reigning U-16 BC Champions and look to be firing an all eight cylinders again this fall. Pat Kay played his second game of the weekend for the U-17's and was charging all over the field.

The U-19 Men had a good game but came away on the short end of a 40-24 score to Velox. Again, lots of talent but Velox simply had the better day.

Great day Sunday with lots of spectators and players enjoying the sunny weather.

THOMAS KAY DAY(S)

Great to see Thomas Kay out for both days of rugby. Thomas is working hard on his recovery down in Victoria. His strength is gaining every day only to be proven by a sure handed, gripping handshake he gave me. He announced that he took his first steps this past week which will certainly lead to more and more. Thomas said to me as he pointed to the field, "I be back on there soon!"

FIELD PROJECT

The first big test for the field expansion and drainage project took place last Friday/Saturday. Despite almost 3" of rain the field, thet is normally a quagmire after such an onslaught, was in really good shape after the 3rd game on Saturday. Very little standing water and any water laying around after a downpour quickly disappeared into the new system. Saturday morning the three new big pipes draining the property were almost too much for the 12" culvert under Herd Rd., which was barely able to hold the flow. In the past, absolutely no water came out of the old collapsed pipes that were replaced. Please see the boards inside the clubhouse what is proposed as far as new bleachers and stands. On that note, thanks to Taffy for driving down to Victoria with his trailer to pick up two sets of small metal bleachers that were being discarded. (They seat 20 people each and are portable)

CLUB CLOTHING

The Kukri gear is in and quite a bit was sold Saturday ($900.00) worth. 8 of the 10 jackets went. It all looks pretty good. Jerseys hopefully will be in this week.

HELP AROUND THE CLUB

It is expected that all members contribute towards the things that need to be done around the club. If you see that something is not done on a gameday, please think about taking it upon yourself to help out.

Things that anyone can...but only a few ever do....

-Put up "Rugby Game Today" signs out on Herd Rd. pre game
-Take the signs down and put them away after game.
-Light woodstove in clubhouse
-Set up table, umbrella and chairs for Commissionaire
-Put up spectator rope on east side of field.
-Keep the scoreboard up to date during the games.
-Run lines when there aren't paid side judges around.
-Direct traffic in the parking lot.
-Pick up garbage when you see it.
-Ensuring there is a replacement ball(s) for the games.
-Pick up empty glasses in and around the clubhouse.
-Move picnic tables around.
-Pick up change for the Commissionaire.
-Wood for woodstove moved upstairs.
-Offer the Commissionaire a short break.
-Make sure the referees are settled
-Field flags are properly positioned
-Goal post cushions are in place.
-Help those serving after game meal.
-Last person out close and lock gate.
-Phone the scores into the Times Colonist & BC Rugby News.

Some people are getting a bit burned out at the amount of work that they do in and around the club. We need more people to step up. Even a small help is a big help. If we could get a different person doing one small job every weekend that would be a huge help.

All for now
