February 4, 2010
Great training session Tuesday with over 50 athletes on the field. Senior men saw several new players out including 3 large fellows (props) from Ladysmith and graduates of the Cowichan Jrs.We have physio out on Tuesday's and Thursdays so make sure if you (males and females) are nicked and/or dinged, come out and get your assessment and/or treatment during training times. This seems to be working quite well to present.
The men's training session is out last before our opening games of the season. Let's make it a good showing. We have three games this weekend with the 1st and 2nd XV playing on Saturday and the 3rd XV playing on Sunday.
*Gate Proceeds and donations for this weekends matches will be put towards the Cowichan Junior Program in Nigel Geach's name.
Saturday, February 6
- 1st Division Women: Cowichan vs JBAA @ 11:30 am CANCELLED (JBAA was unable to put a team in the league)
- 1st Division Men: Cowichan vs Burnaby Lake RFC @ 1:00 pm at Cowichan
- CDI Premier Men: Cowichan vs Burnaby Lake RFC @ 2:30 pm at Cowichan
Sunday, February 7
- 3rd Division Men: Cowichan vs Castaway Wanderers @ 1:00pm at Windsor Park
We split our games over in Burnaby last season with the 1st Division winning by 10 points and the Prems losing 44-23. This season Burnaby visits Cowichan for the first time in 12 years. Some may remember our first Premier Championship was a victory over these same Burnaby boys in 1997 down at U-Vic.
Burnaby is a top club in the Province and is well coached by Mike James, who is the head man for the BC Bears, of the ARC Tournament. Not sure on who's out for the boys in blue, but no doubt they'll be a tough bunch of Blue Collar boys from this "just east" of Vancouver suburb. There is word that the Fijian connection that were part of the Bayside Sharks last season are now playing for Burnaby. So I think we'll see Elatia and his buddies this weekend. They'll be good for a song or two after the game.
It should be an interesting match. Cowichan was competitive last season and although Burnaby finished below us in the standings, we all new they were a better team than their 10th seed indicated at seasons end. Cowichan will bring it's workmanlike attitude to what should be an entertaining game between two "like" clubs.
3RD DIV vs POWELL RIVER
A good victory for Cowichan at 59-0 up in Powell River. Great turnout for Cowichan as the Powell River Otago had a close association with Cowichan in that our Nigel Geach was a founding member of the Otago in the 70's. Great to see the club support and celebration for Nigel at his other "home" club.
CLUB CLOTHING
Will be available for purchase at the club on Thursday evening. See Barb.
TIDBITS
-Trying to find a pair of rugby shorts for "Chunk". Does anyone have anything with a 45" leg?
-The BCRU is having each club complete forms identifying "Import" players and separate forms identifying "Non-Import Players" No team may have on the roster of 22 any more than 3 Import Players. All players that are Imports will also be identified with an "I" on the game sheets. Resident players will be identified with an "R" on the game sheets.
-The motion to restructure the league was turned down by .4%. They needed 75% majority to pass and got 74.6%. Relegation/Promotion is still in limbo, but it is believed it will be a motion at the BCRU AGM where it will probably pass. There is a feeling that this season will be still used to sort out who stays up and who get dropped. (3 out of the 9 teams will be dropped)
-Nanaimo plays Surrey over there this weekend.
