Score from the Weekend:1st Div: Cowichan 28 vs Ravens 27: 17 year old Pat Kay had a tremendous game at #10 for Cowichan and booted the long distance penalty with time running out to win the game. Very tight match.
Premier: Ravens 26 vs Cowichan 20: Cowichan up 14-10 at the half and 20-16 with 10 left. Cowichan let off a bit and the crafty Fairhurst scampered in for one and set up another for the victory. Second straight week of frustration for Cowichan with less than a minute to go. Cowichan, needing a converted try to win and pressing hard near the Raven goal line with the clock ticking down, Cowichan was awarded a penalty 5m in front of the Ravens posts. After pushing the Ravens scrum around during the game, captain for Cowichan called for a set scrum. Ref refused Cowichan's request saying there was not time left for a scrum??? The ensuing tap and go saw the ball carrier knock on at the goal line... game over. Even match, pretty good rugby.

Tye Hamblin (Cowichan RFC/Ladysmith, BC)
Pat Fraser, Scott McLeod and Ty Hamblin are all currently playing Premier Men's rugby with the club. This will certainly prepare them for the U-20 competition which will take place in Russia (Moscow) in late May. One of the knocks against the National U-20 teams coming out of Canada is that many of the players aren't getting to play top level rugby prior to the tournament like other country's players do. Cowichan RFC is doing our part to ensure the boys are best prepared for their once in a lifetime experience.
The Rugby Canada Foundation, which is a separate entity from Rugby Canada, has done a great job in securing funding through donations for the U-20 Men's team. Last World Cup the the players were able to travel to Japan almost free of expenses as a result of the Foundation providing the much needed funding for the players. It also takes the stress and pressure off of players and their parents financially while preparing to participate in the tournament.
Matt Ronald-Jones currently heads up the Foundation and if anyone is interested in helping out, please go to the Rugby Canada Foundation website where you can contact Matt directly.
