1:00pm: 3rd Division Men, Cowichan RFC vs Powell River Otago RFC at Herd Rd.

Cowichan RFC hosts the Mighty Capilanos of the North Shore this weekend for the first time since 1998, that memorable date in Piggie lore, when we defeated the Caps to win our second Rounsefell Cup.

The 4-2 Capilanos take on the 2-4 Piggies in what could be a belle-weather game for both clubs. A win for the 8th place Piggies....and we could optimistically jump into sixth place in the standings and be in a playoff position. A win for the 4th place Caps could get them clear of the logjam of standings between 4th and 8th. Velox and Castaway Wanderers, just ahead of us in the standings, have tough road games against Burnaby and Bayside respectively.

So...we are the only game in town...er...on the island as everyone else including Nanaimo is away on the mainland this weekend. Let's hope to see a good crowd on hand to see the young guns in the 1st Division go for their 3rd win in a row against a very good Caps side that is sitting in first place in the standings. The Piggie Prems hope to field a full squad this weekend with several key players now back in the line-up.

OTHER BCRU HAPPENINGS

The BCRU sent out the list of declared Import Players today. This is an attempt to finally check the rosters of teams who aren't following the rules of having only 3 Import players on a roster of 22 players.

I was very surprised to see that the roster listed 76 International players on the 12 clubs playing in the BCRU. We must remember that most of the clubs in the this league do field three men's sides and perhaps some of the import players would be playing in lower divisions. But still, the high number is pretty surprising. Another bad thing about relegation as teams will do anything to avoid it and perhaps this stymies development of local Canucks?????

I am pretty happy to report that besides U-Vic, who has no Import players, Cowichan only has one amongst our 100 odd registered senior men. James Bay is also pretty Canadian with only 3 imports, two of which are now residents. The team with the most Import players is the Rowers with 18 foreign players the team with the least is U-Vic with 0 Imports. Below is a list, which is interesting, as you would be surprised on who's who in the zoo. I was very surprised at the Caps numbers considering there good Canadian base.....

-Vancouver Rowing Club: 8 Full Imports, 10 Resident Imports: Total @ 18
-Meralomas: 6 Full Imports, 4 Resident Imports: Total @ 10
-Capilano RFC: 5 Full Imports, 5 Resident Imports: Total 10
-UBC Old Boys Ravens: 5 Full Imports, 4 Resident Imports: Total @ 9
-Velox RFC: 3 Full Imports, 5 Resident Imports: Total @ 8
-Burnaby RFC: 5 Full Imports, 2 Resident Imports: Total @ 7
-Castaway Wanderers RFC: 5 Full Imports, 1 Resident Imports: Total @ 6
-Bayside RFC: 3 Full Imports, 0 Resident Imports: Total @ 4
-UBC Thunderbirds: 4 Full Imports, 0 Resident Imports: Total @ 9
-JBAA: 1 Full Imports, 2 Resident Imports: Total @ 3
-Cowichan RFC: 1 Full Imports, 0 Resident Imports: Total @ 1
-U-Vic Vikes: 0 Full Imports, 0 Resident Imports: Total @ 0

Cowichan, per capita, with a large men's registration is doing quite nicely developing young locals to be better rugby players. But it does show what we are up against when playing some of these teams.

All for now and see you this weekend at the Park!
