RESULTS FROM THIS PAST WEEKEND'S GAMES

Premier Women: Cowichan 9 vs United RFC 31
Premier Men: Cowichan 17 vs Capilanos 24
1st Div. Men: Cowichan 10 vs Capilanos 34
3rd Div. Men: Cowichan 17 vs Powell River 10

Premier Men

Very good game for the spectators this weekend at Piggie Park. Capilanos, one of the perennial top clubs in the Premiership over the last 15 years were good enough to eke out q 24-17 win over our Premier Men this past weekend. There coach spoke highly of the green and black after the game is saying that it's great to play against a local club with a strong development program with very few imports (we only have one) and no carded players from elsewhere. He also said that the Capilanos played their best game of the season against us...and thank goodness they did as if we played anything but our best...Cowichan would have won.

Capilano are a class club and it was great to host them once again.

1st Division Men

The 1sts played well against a very good Caps 2XV, the undefeated league leaders. These guys beat James Bay's very good 2nd XV. I was pleased to see the young guys never give up and should have scored at least another brace of tries against the Caps. The two that were scored were great push over maul efforts from the 10m line which was a small, but huge mental victory for the young Piggies. We missed Patrick Kaye on the day due to his Canada U-17 commitments in England.

3rd Division Men

The 3rds hosted Powell R. and came away with a tough 17-10 victory over a pretty good Otago side.

Premier Women

The Premier Women played competitively against the league leading United women, a club that has been in the Premiership for several years. The Cowichan women currently sit in 3rd place out of 5 teams.

The women play a very hard game against a younger, more fit and, skilled United team. We came up a little short 31 - 9 but showed a lot of heart and played a true Piggie style game - lots of big hits and lots of rucking and mauling. The United sideline were saying all day long that we had the best defense they have played against this year.

At one time late in the second half our girls marched the ball down the field with over 15 phases of play. It was awesome to watch them pound the ball down the united girls throat time and time again.

Another time there was at least 3 of there girls down hurt from trying to stop our power house forward and and strong centers. Players that stood out were Audrey Park playing at outside center with her huge hits. Carolyn who made a monster hit on there second row that figured on run her over and ended up being dumped on her back. Morgan Gregson at standoff that made more than 25 tackles. Sherry playing at eight had a great game leading the forwards all over the park.

All the girls played very well and could've been man of the match. Caity Genereaux booted 3 penalty kicks from about 25meter out, unfortunately the ladies couldn't make there way over the line for a try.

The ladies are really coming together as a team and I can see a win or two for us in the games to come. Make sure you come out and watch the women play some solid Piggie rugby, It is very enjoyable to watch the girls take so much pride in there game and in the green and black jersey. The ladies now have two weekends off then will be home to Burnaby April 10th.

THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES

2:30pm: Premier Men: Cowichan vs Castaway Wanderers at Windsor Park
*Premier Women: Cowichan has a bye.

SUNDAY, MARCH 28
1:00pm: Cowichan vs Castaway Wanderers at Herd Rd

I like our chances with 4 games left! The guys are really starting to play some good rugby now and with all our toughest games behind us, this could be a fun stretch run.

THE STRETCH RUN

With the bonus point for our Prems. this past weekend, the team is still in contention for probably the last playoff spot although Bayside's current 5th place status is still with reach.. There are 3 teams withing striking distance ahead of us.

-Rowers have the toughest schedule having to play JBAA over here, the Caps, Velox at Velox and us over there.
-Burnaby has a tough remaining schedule.
-CW has two winnable games vs UBC & Burnaby and two toughies against us and Caps.
-Old Boys are like CW with two winnable games and two tough games.
-Velox has a schedule like Cowichan with 4 reasonably hard games
-Cowichan has a reasonably tough remaining schedule but if we continue to play well we could do well.
-Bayside also has a tough schedule having to play Caps, Meralomas and us.

The final 4 games is going to be a crap shoot with each team holding it's own destiny...You win out and all's good!

Cowichan Prems, with 4 games left have already bettered last seasons total output of 11 points as we now stand with 12 in the standings. One big improvement has been our offensive scoring. Cowichan scored 104 points after completing 7 games in 2009. After 7 games in 2010 we have upped our output by 50% and 155 points to date. We currently sit 6th in scoring points. Defensively, after 7 games in 2009 we allowed 258 points scored against us.....to date in 2010 after 7 games we have allowed 221 against......which is an improvement as well.

I have to believe that relegation will not happen. After UBC's Spencer McTavish has made it known they will pull their club out of the BCRU if they are dropped, I think this has many thinking deeply. There are lots old UBC Alumni out there that won't let relegation happen if it's their old club. Every club we have spoken to seems to be against it.

Here are the details for the clubs we are vying with for playoff spots.....If the stars all align correctly, we could very well end up in 5th place with 4 wins.......

5th: Bayside has 21 points play #3 Capliano, #2 Meraloma, #12 UBC, #9 Cowichan (CURRENT PLAYOFF SPOT)
6th: Velox has 17 points play #4 U-Vic, #7 Ravens, #9 Cowichan, #10 Rowers (CURRENT PLAYOFF SPOT)
7th: UBC Old Boys have 14 points play #12 UBC, #6 Velox, #11 Burnaby, #4 U-Vic
8th: Castaway Wanderers have 14 points play #9 Cowichan, #11 Burnaby, #12 UBC, #3 Capilanos
9th: Cowichan has 12 points play # 8 Castaway Wanderers, #10 Rowers, #6 Velox, #5 Bayside
10th: Rowers have 9 points play #1 JBAA, #9 Cowichan, #3 Capilano, #6 Velox (RELEGATION SPOT?)
11th: Burnaby has 4 points play #2 Meraloma,#1 JBAA, #7 Ravens, #8 Castaway Wanderers (RELEGATION SPOT?)
12th: UBC has 3 points. #7 Ravens, #2 Meralomas, #5 Bayside, #8 Castaway Wanderers, (RELEGATION SPOT?)
