MORE LOCALS IN INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

19 year old CRFC Junior and Duncan native, Carlin Hamstra, who is schooling and playing rugby in Hiedleburg, Germany, is winding up his season by playing for his team in the German National Rugby Championship game. Carlin is also joined by former Cowichan player Caine Elisara on a team and country that is building their rugby. Carlin returns home in a couple of weeks and we hope to see him tossing the ball around on Thursday's at the club.

PROPERTY PROJECT

The next phase of the project is ready to move forward in the next couple of weeks. The following areas will be addressed;

-Hole to be filled with material already on site.
-Area where hole is to be recovered as more playing surface at present and future grandstands location.
-Area west side of clubhouse to be excavated 12" deep, drainage around clubhouse replaced and playground equipment installed and pea gravel added to fill 12" excavation.
-Berm between clubhouse cleaned up and landscaped.
-Big rocks removed.
-Large berm west side of parking lot to be cut back.
-Parking lot to be raised 12" with gravel, leveled. then compacted and sloped to installed drains and catch basins. Dress with 3-4" of crushed gravel.
-6' Fence to be installed across property between playing surface and parking lot. Where the fence will go between the buildings has yet to be determined, but the thought is to enclose the clubhouse and concession inside the fence for security reasons. There will be 4 gates in the fence. Large 18' gate on east side. 3 x 4' entrance gates (one near front of clubhouse, 1 main access gate between clubhouse and concession (Commissionaire point of entry) and one gate somewhere between the concession and the large vehicle access gate on the east side.

VIRU NEWS

AGM was held in Nanaimo this past Wednesday. 7 Clubs in attendance with visitors. The highlights were the motions that have been put forward for the BCRU AGM.

Key Motions:

-Limiting Carded Players to 3 per team or in combination with Imports, 4 players either being import or carded. Motioned by Capilanos.
-Upping the team fees from $1100 to $1350. This will cost CRFC another $1000. Motioned by the BCRU.
-More enforcement of roster submissions. Motioned by BCRU
-New league structure. Very confusing, but no relegation. Option "B" was favoured by the VIRU, but everyone was confused re the details.

We had an election of officers and John James was nominated by Port Alberni which was seconded by Nanaimo. Phil Myer, the incumbent, also stood. John James won the ensuing election and is the new VIRU VP Game. (Mostly scheduling and administering the rules) Phil has done an outstanding job over the past years and it will be some work to keep his high standards! Thanks Phil! Andrew Spray remains as VIRU President.

U-14 CRIMSON TIDE

Word has it that 4 players from Cowichan have been selected to play on the Zone 6 squad from the island. Once I get the names I will post. The BC Summers Games are in Langley this summer and from this tournament, 2 BC teams will be selected to go to the Nationals.

7's RUGBY

Cowichan will have two teams entered in this summers 7's Series which features 7 different tournaments. You have to compete in 4 to qualify. The men and women are building their expect teams and it is hoped that by next Thursday's training session at the club, the teams will gel. All players welcome. Now that High School Rugby is finished, this is a great opportunity for Prep Athletes to keep their fitness up and have a lot of fun while they are at it. Some of the teams being entered in the tournaments will be High School age, so no one will be out of place. Don't forget, 7's Rugby will be a full Olympic Sport in 2016 in Brazil.
