LAST WEEKEND'S GAME vs. PORT ALBERNI

The bus traveled up to Port Alberni for a friendly vs.. the Black Sheep last Saturday and is was a very good outing for the club. With a bunch of new players in the line-up the Senior Men seemed to gel and click against the always tough Port types. The new faces played very well and with exception of some missed passes due to lack of play time, there were few mistakes. Port Alberni put on a great scran for the boys after the match. The ride back was good with the usual revelry and songmanship. We won the game by the way.

WORK PARTY

This Saturday, Sept 4, prior to our match with Velox at 2:30, the club is having a work bee starting at 10am. There are several things that need "tuning up" prior to our opening weekend the following Saturday. If you can't make is Saturday, feel free to drop by at any time to do your part.

Jobs that need to be done:

-Rake out rocks and debris on all berms to ready for seeding.
-Clean up around clubhouse.
-Usual grass and weed issues.
-Raise the posts
-Pathway for new main entrance.
-General clean-up.
-Picnic Table repair.
-Move playground equipment into area west side of clubhouse.

GROUNDS PROJECT

Fence Work: Gord Closson has been contracted to build the fence across the property. The fence will be 6' high and will traverse the width of the grounds basically between the edge of the playing surface and the parking lot at the to of the berm. The fence will go straight across from the east property line where it will take a jog near the concession, follow the concrete at the back of the concession, cross the current pathway from the change rooms and then turn to run parallel between the clubhouse and bunker to the west property line. There will be a 14' sliding vehicle access gate close to the east property line, then three 4' access gates. One 4' main entrance gate which will be located near the new parking lot between the concession and playing surface, one 4' gate between the change rooms and the playing fields (where current pathway is) and a 4' gate between the bunker and the stairs leading to the front entrance of the clubhouse. The gate, as discussed earlier, will be heavy duty chain link with a bar running along the top. The reasons for the fence are (a) to protect our $500,000.00 investment in the playing surface, (b) to gain better access control during games, (c) as a revenue generator for our corporate sponsors to have their banners placed upon. (10 sold to date for a total of $5000.00)

Field Tidbits: The fields have been measured and laid out. I want to thank Gregor Grantham for his help on this. I am pleased to report that as promised, we have two full International 70m x 100m Rugby Pitches. The end zones is where we compromised and we will have 8m (25') end zones - same as Shawnigan Lake's Main Pitch. Field "B" is the regulation 5m(18') from the south fence and the distance between Field "A" and "B" is 5m. The end zones each have another 2m between the that and the property line. As a bonus to the lined rugby fields, we have added an area of playing surface between the parking lot and Field "A" that measures 17m x 75m (50' x 240') as additional practice field and later will be used for grandstands. The two sets of posts - thanks Bob Hale for looking after getting the new set built and having both sets painted - are to be installed later this week along with the actual lining of the fields.

Playground:Will be reinstalled in the new area between the clubhouse and the west property line. We are getting 3-4 loads of pea gravel in shortly and will commence work in this area shortly.

PASSING

We all know Gopher (His real name was Robin McDowell) for his times in and around the club. He passed away last week after a short illness. It was great to see so many club people at his "party" at the Rowing Club last Friday. He will be missed.
