And then there was one…  1st Division Women Return to BCRU Finals

After a year’s absence, the ladies of the black and green return to the BCRU Province Wide 1st Division Finals this Saturday, May 10 at Stanley Park’s Brockton Oval, K/O 1:10 pm.

And a cinderella season came up just short for the young (but still mighty) 3rd Division Men with a BCRU Semi-Final loss to the Vancouver Kats.

1st Division Women

The 1st Division made a statement in their BCRU Semi-Final match up against Ridge-Meadows winning 32-0.  Through wet conditions, the sure handed Piggies pounced on Ridge-Meadows early, scoring 22 points in the first 15 minutes.  Ridge-Meadows eventually found some momentum, pinning the Piggies in their defensive end for much of the remaining half but strong tackling and fierce defence kept them off the board.

Half time saw some fresh bodies on the pitch and the results were immediately felt.  Momentum shifted back toward the black and green and stayed that way for the rest of the game.  Another 10 points in the second half and a birth to the BC Finals!

Cowichan’s Scorers:
Carolyn Gudmundseth:  2 tries
Laura Russell:  1 try
Sherry Spence:  1 ty
Michelle Moore:  1 try, 1 convert
Bristine Gibbons:  1 try

The ladies will play Saturday, May 10, 1:10 pm KO vs the old team to defeat them this year, Kamloops.  Travel details are below for anyone interested.

3rd Division Men

The 3rd Division Men met the Vancouver Kats in their BCRU final – a team we haven’t seen at Piggie Park for some time.  Kats are a single team club and just this year, dropped down to the 3rd division.

Our young Piggies started the game tough, receiving a yellow card with in the first 5 minutes of the game.  The Kat quickly took advantage of their extra body and took an early 7-0 lead.  The Piggies eventually answered with a penalty from Cam Hall right before half, closing the gap slightly:  7-3.

The Kats added to their lead with a penalty and unconverted try before the Piggies started pushing back.  Some late momentum in the last 20 minutes produced a try by Jenner Teufel but it simply wasn’t enough in a game of mistakes, ball-handling errors, wet conditions and poor decision-making by the young Piggie side.

A disappointing end for this energetic, young side to be sure.  However, like their 1st division brothers, they form a solid foundation for our Club which will surely pay dividends in the not-so-distant future.
