Piggies hit the century

The Senior Piggies combine for over 100 points last weekend!

1st Division Men 56 – UVic Norseman 50

Cowichan Scorers:

Darren Sage 1 try
Andrew Gudmundseth 2 tries
Ty Jones 1 try
Owen Wood 1 try, 3 converts
Jenner Teufel 2 tries
Robin Gusse 1 tries
Sean Williams 1 tries
James Paterson 1 tries

A win was what the Piggies needed and a win is what they got.  With a total of 18 tries scored between both teams, tries came fast and they came often!

The game started as UVic games often do – speedy backs breaking tackles and scoring early.  The Norse jumped out to a 12 point lead before the Piggies got any real possession.  Once they did however, they controlled the play using a balance of dominating forward play with tidy finishes from the backs.  Four straight tries put the Piggies in the lead halfway through the first half with a bonus point in already in their pockets.

The Norse fought back and scored twice more, briefly taking the lead back but it wouldn’t last long as the Piggies, down a man in the bin, stole one back right before half to regain the lead. 27-27 Piggies at half.

The second half started similar to the first with the Norse striking first with the Piggies quickly responding.  The lead changed back and forth until about the midway point when the Piggies pulled away with 4 consecutive tries.  A misunderstanding around the time remaining in the game allowed the Norse to regain possession and score once more at full time but it was not enough to regain the lead.

In many ways, it was a difficult game but the boys managed to stay focused throughout.   The weather was unseasonably warm, the bench was short, and there were key injuries in the pack. Sean Williams stepped into the front row for only the second time in his rugby career.  Matt Melgaard also moved into pack late in the game to help shore up the forwards.  The pack, in spite of the injuries, managed to remain dominant throughout the game.  The backs were challenged to contend with the speedy UVic backs, who did all of UVic’s scoring.  But when they had ball in hand, they were equally challenging to handle. As evidence by the score, defense for both sides was a struggle.

All in all, it was one of those game that could be desciribed as a ‘character win’.

This week the Piggies travel to Westshore this Saturday to resume Cowichan Cup competition.  Westshore is leading the league with a 2-1 record.  The Piggies at 1-2 will look to string a second win together and climb up the standings.

1st Division Women 52 – Nanaimo 15

Cowichan Scorers:

Rikki Wylie 2 tries
Carolyn Gudmundseth 3 tries
Jamie Russell 1 try
Tyson Beukeboom 2 tries, 2 converts
Michelle Moore 2 try, 1 convert

Saturday was a great day for the women’s rugby team, going up to play Nanaimo, an old rival and always a tough opponent. If you look at the score you might assume it was an easy game for the visiting team but the Hornets put up a good fight, but things just seemed to finally click for the Piggies.  The game plan was to get the ball out wide and when you look at who scored, you know it worked.

Player of the game went to Forward Bristin Gibbons and Back Carolyn Gudmundseth.

The ladies host Brit-Lions this Saturday at Piggie Park.

Junior Girls 38 – Nanaimo 25

The Junior girls started their 15s season with a big win Sunday over Nanaimo.   All points were brought by the letter M:  Try scores by Mia, MJ, Makayla and Mittise, conversions from Mittise, MJ and 2 from Macy!

The girls will head up to Comox this weekend.

Junior Boys

The U16 Boys travelled to Port Alberni for a great match and after game hosting by them.  Port is new to the league this year and we are really excited to have them around.  They have come a long way since our first game against them.

This weekends game against CW at home has been cancelled – no makeup is planned as of yet.
