Premier Women 17 – Burnaby Lake 10

A skeleton crew team took the field against Burnaby last weekend.  Missing 4 starting forwards, Kaelyn Palmer, Rebecca “Cali” Saari, and the Russell sisters  With or without all these players, Cowichan knew it was going to be a tough game, but that’s premier rugby – every game is going to be tough! Everyone has to be ready for everything and anything.  Without 4 starting players – all in the scrum – the Piggies had players our of position and players up from second division.  Notably, Lenneke Vinoly jump in at hooker for her first premier game and had a stormer.

The game started with Burnaby taking a 10-0 lead with a penalty and a converted try.  But that would be all the points Burnaby got on the day.  After that, it was the Natasha Smith show, scoring 3 tries on the day.  Cowichan started closing the gap with the first of Natasha’s tries, converted by Tyson Beukeboom.  Half time score 10-7 to Burnaby.

The second half saw Natasha crash over the line 2 more times.  It was a game of great team work, everyone did there jobs, making huge runs and hits through out the game.  A standout performance came from Ashley Smith who played tight head prop, against Burnaby’s National player.  Gash was selected as  player of the game for the forwards.  Natasha got player of the game for Backs.

With the national team away to Ireland for there November tour, the rest of the Piggies are off to Seattle to take on the current leader of the Premier Division this weekend.

Junior Girls

The Junior girls travelled to CW last weekend for an exhibition game VS South island. They split everyone up and did some specific skills and drills with some of the local women players. The game was shortened so the girls could watch the CIS championships being held at UVic.

Canada Selections

Local and former Cowichan player (though listed as CW) Denise Roy has been named to join the Senior 7’s travelling squad for Rugby Americas North tournament in Trinidad this weekend.  Congratulations Denise!

1st Division Men

The 1st Division Men had a much need weekend off last weekend.  This weekend they will host their last home game of the fall season against CW.  The Piggies have had a good run against the Premier Club 1st Division teams over the last few years and they hope to extend that streak tomorrow.

Coach Wright’s message to the Piggie Nation – your Piggies need you support!  Hope to see you Saturday!
