Premier Women 34 – Westshore 34

After a convincing win over Bayside, the Cowichan Premier Women’s rugby team traveled to Westshore  prepared for a battle.  The home team shot out of the gate with their powerful prop dragging two Cowichan defenders across the line to score at the two minute mark.  The try was successfully converted: 7-0 for Westshore.

Undaunted, the Cowichan women came back strong but were unable to break through the hard-hitting Westshore defense.  Opportunity arose when Cowichan was awarded a penalty under the posts which saw Quinn “Quinny” Battie split the uprights: 7-3 for the home team.

Despite Cowichan’s best efforts, Westshore once again used their size and speed to score three more tries before the end of the half bringing the score to 24-3.

Our ladies proved once again that they are a 2nd half team when within a few minutes Ashely Smith plowed through the Westshore defenders.  Thanks to great support, our newly acquired impact player Tyson Beukeboom gave the Cowichan women their first try of the game.  This was successfully converted by Quinn Battie closing the gap to 24-10.

With a little more than 20 minutes to go, the ladies in black and green rose to the challenge and through supreme teamwork Nenagh (Ninja) McCulloch crossed the line:  29-17 for Westshore.

After some great runs and pressure by Cowichan, the always dangerous Laura Russel was awarded a penalty try.  The conversion was unsuccessful but this closed the gap to 29-24 and Cowichan had momentum working in their favour.

Westshore did not give up and used their speed on the outside to score their final try of the game to increase their lead to 34-24.  Minutes later, Cowichan responded with a converted try to bring the score to 34-29.

With minutes to spare, veteran Carolyn Gudmundseth set Rikki Wylie loose to beat the opposition on the outside.  The conversion attempt was unsuccessful and at the final whistle the score was 34-34.

As newcomers to the premier league, Cowichan is extremely proud of their performance against the powerful and experienced Westshore side.  Despite not securing the win, the Cowichan women showed the grit and determination necessary to remain competitive at this level.

The ladies travel to Seattle this weekend to play the league leading Saracens.  Road trips are always tough but going south of the boarder is another experience all together.  The girls are taking a healthy roster and a streak with them and will be looking for the upset.  Safe travels ladies!

1st Division Men 10 – Westshore 27

A disappointing game after last weekend’s outstanding game.  It boiled down to a lack of discipline taking to many penalties and cards leading to our defeat.  The Piggies started strong but couldn’t finish our 1st half opportunities.

With Westshore had a man go to the bin we took our foot off the gas when we should have stomped on it, and let in two soft tries to close out the half.  Then with the game in the balance, we took two pretty soft yellows and that was pretty much it.  One late consultation try to round out the defeat.

The 1st Division Men have a bye this weekend and then return to action hosting Westshore 2 on February 20th.

3rd Division Men 12 – Comox 31

The 3rd traveled Comox on Super Bowl Sunday.  The lads fought hard and held the game close for a while but the shortage of bodies on the pitch eventually took it’s toll and Comox took advantage.

The 3rds travel to Westshore this Sunday – please contact Kim if you’d like to get a game in.  Please make sure you register with Rugby Canada in advance of the game!
