Junior Girls 7s Provincial Championships

Last week 40 Cowichan girls traveled to Kamloops to compete in the Provincial 7s Championships. The Piggies, ages of 12-18, competed in 4 different categories U14, U16 Elite, U16 Open and U19 Open.

The BC Provincials for 7’s Rugby is such a great opportunity for these ladies. There are 60 teams from all over BC at this event, majority being female teams. Each division played 5 games in a total over 2 days.

U14s

Our U14 came home 7th.  This young squad learned a lot and really came together by the end of the weekend.

U16s

The U16 Open finished 13th but closed the tournament playing their best game.  Stand out performances came from Paige Clarke and Ella Duncan- Reda!

U16 Elite

U16 elite played a team called Celtic Barbarians early Sunday morning narrowly winning 12-7, then had a rematch for the bronze medal game but unfortunately lost in the last second of the game, coming home 4th spot. Jaxon Baker had the most tries for Cowichan over the weekend.  Unfortunately Bailey McMillian was broke her ankle in the first game, which was a blow to the team.

U19s

U19 started their tournament with a loss to Kamloops in pool play but got the catch for a rematch in their final game.  The final game rematch against Kamloops was also there best game of the weekend – winning 5th sport with a 32-7!

Congratulations to all the girls and huge thanks to coaches Sherry, Angie and Meghan and all the chaperones!

The junior girls program now moves to 15’s rugby for the next 6 weeks.  Cowichan will be hosting both the Islands (November 25) and BC Championships (December 2).

1st Division Women

The part of our women’s team traveled to Westshore last weekend to play in WS 50th anniversary celebrations.  The team was low in number last weekend owing to a number of factors but given the importance of the event to Westshore, we made an effort to send some players.  Westshore bolstered our side with their own players so the match could be played.

Congratulations to Westshore – Velox – on their big anniversary.  Many happy returns.

The week before last, the Piggies faced Nanaimo in a home rematch.  Blostered by the return of Canadian international, Laura Russell, the Piggies came away with a comprehensive victory, 38-25.

Cowichan Scorers:

Carolyn “No Really, I’m retiring” Gudmunseth – 2 tries
Rikki Wyle – 2 tries
Jamie Russell – 1 try
Helen Brancato – 1 try
Tyson Buekeboom – 1 try, 4 conversions

1st Division Men

The guys made their first trip over to the mainland to play the ever-strong Bayside.  It was another tough outing for the young side, going scoreless for the second game in a row.

Coach Wright reports that numbers are improving, and though the last two games have been difficult, improvements are coming.  For many, the physicality of the men’s game has been a challenge.  The team stays positive and are still having fun despite these challenges.
