Junior Girls Championship

Cowichan RFC is very excited to be hosting the Island Championships this weekend and the BC Championships next weekend at Piggy Park!

Island Finals:

Cowichan U16 will play the combined team of James Bay and Westshore for then Island Final.  The short staffed Piggies narrowly lost to the combined Victoria sides last weekend 27-32.  The Piggies will be field a full side this weekend and it should be some exciting rugby!

The U19 Piggies form part of the North Island team and will face-off against their South Island counterparts for the Island championship.  The U19 team has lost to the South both times this season, but have gotten better each time!

And before the championships games, our U12 & U14 girls will have a home game.

Come out and cheer for our girls.  The concession will be open!

1st Division Men 27 – James Bay 34

The 1st division men had another close match with promising results against James Bay the weekend before last.  Despite the loss in Times Cup rugby competition, the Piggies earned one valuable bonus point in the standings and came close to picking up a second.

Not bad considering our side was supported by 3rd division players and played a side bolstered with Premier players.

The Piggies opened the score on a try by prop Arthur Gray within the first 10 minutes. Bruce Moss also scored off a scrum, and when the first half ended, the teams were deadlocked at 10-10.

The Bays started the second half with three quick tries, but the no-quit Piggies found their feet again, getting a try from Robbie McDonnell, which Owen Wood converted. Bruce Moss scored on an open-field play to earn the first bonus point. The Piggies were within eight points with time winding down but facing a deep bench, the boys weren’t able to grab that last bonus point.

Despite another loss, this game was the strongest game so far.  The Piggies were without a few key players and, had they faced a true 1st division side, the result may well have been different.  The set pieces have improved, the systems are coming together and there is a sense of no-quit in the side.

This weekend the boys travel over the hump to Port.  Always a fun trip, the boys are looking forward to matching up against their barnyard foes.  Spectators are welcome to join!
