Piggy Rugby Fest

The Piggy Fest is fast becoming one of the go-to summer rugby festivals in the province!  This year’s version of the Piggy was another great success!  Great rugby, friends, camping, food, drink and entertainment was had by all!

This event is vital to the health of our club through the summer months.  Our thanks to Kaelyn Palmer and her team for putting it all together!

1st Division Men 40 vs Reed Weybridge (England) 28

Cowichan scorers:

  • Bruce Moss (c): 1 try
  • Arthur Grey: 1 try
  • Amish Dobson:  2 tries
  • Chris Hopps:  1 try
  • Sean Griffith:  1 try
  • Owen Wood:  5 converts

The Piggies hosted a rare senior touring side on July 12 (even more rare, on a Friday evening).  It was a super busy night at Piggy Park as the Juniors also hosted 2 sides from Queen Elizabeth Hospital School the same evening!

Reed Weybridge from Surrey, England came to Canada with an English championship in their pocket and a flawless record on their Canadian tour… but that came to an abrupt halt once they reached the Warm Land.

Cowichan had a strong side of youth and experience with a long bench.  The Piggies put in a solid performance, taking advantage of the road-weary visitors.

It was a beautiful evening to host our many guests from the UK.  As usual, the visitors were treated to the famous Cowichan hospitality!  Many thanks to Angie for the amazing dinner and to Heritage House – John James for providing Man of the Match mugs and for helping Coach Wright manage the side.

Senior Men’s Rugby

The first scheduled game is expected September 14.  The 1st XV will play in the BC Wide 1st Division with crossover games with the Premier Reserve teams throughout the year.  Coach Wright is expected to start formal training in mid-August – details to come.

Boner is also looking for assistance in the form of trainers, managers or assistant coaches.

3rd Division Men

Cowichan and Nanaimo are entertaining the idea of combining forces in 3rd division this coming fall.  Anyone interested should contact Andrew Wright for more information.

Senior Women’s Rugby

After many years at the helm, Taffy has decided to retire from coaching the women’s side.  The team is actively looking for someone to step in – anyone interested or know of someone who might be should contact Sherry Spence.

For the fall portion of the season, the Piggies will compete strictly as Cowichan in the Island 1st Division.  Decisions about the second half team composition (i.e. whether we merge against with Westshore) will be determined later in the fall.
